U.S. YOUTH SOCCER LAWS MODIFIED
UNDER SEVEN (U7) 4 V 4 FORMAT

LAW I – THE FIELD

A. FORMAT: Split games. Two (2) fields adjacent to each other with 4 players (4 V4) from each team competing.

B. Dimensions: The field of play shall be rectangular, its length being not more than 40 yards and its width not more than 30 yards nor less than 20 yards. The length in all cases shall exceed the width.

U.S. YOUTH SOCCER RECOMMENDATION: LENGTH: 50 YARDS WIDTH: 30 YARDS

C. MARKINGS: 1. Distinctive lines not more than (5) inches wide.

  1. A halfway line shall be marked out across the field.
  2. A center circle with a five (5) yard radius.
  3. Four corner arcs with a two (2) foot radius.
  4. Goal area: three (3) yards into the field of play joined by a line drawn parallel with the goal line.

D. GOALS: Size of hockey goals or 6’ x 12’.

LAW II – THE BALL:  Size three (3).

LAW III – NUMBER OF PLAYERS:

  1. Two (2) fields adjacent to each other with a maximum of 4 players (4 V4) from each team competing on each field at one time. No goalkeeper.
  2. Maximum number of players on the roster should not exceed: sixteen (16).
  3. Substitutions: Injuries or See Law VII.
  4. Playing time: Each player SHALL play a minimum of 50% of the total playing time.
  5. Teams and games may be co-ed.

LAW IV – PLAYERS EQUIPMENT:

  1. Footwear: Tennis shoe or soft-cleated soccer shoes.
  2. Shin guards: MANDATORY.
  3. Other equipment shall conform to FIFA.

LAW V – REFERRE:

  1. Parent/coach or assistant. (Logical choice).
  2. Registered or associate referee.
  3. All rule infractions shall be briefly explained to the offending player.

LAW VI – LINESMAN:  Use club linesman (parent or coach)

LAW VII – DURATION OF THE GAME:

  1. The game shall be divided into four (4) equal twelve (12) minute quarters.
  2. There shall be a two (2) minute break between quarter one (1) and quarter two (2), and another two minute break between quarters three (3) and four (4).
  3. There shall be a half-time break of five (5) minutes between quarters two (2) and three (3).
    1. U.S. Youth Soccer recommends that Parent/Coaches substitute between quarters to ensure that all players present play a minimum of 50% of the game.

LAW VII – START OF PLAY:  Conform to FIFA with the following exception:

  1. Opponents must be six (5) yards from the center mark while kick-offs are in progress.
  2. Kick off should be forward and to a teammate.

LAW IX – BALL IN AND OUT OF PLAY: Conform to FIFA. The whole ball must be outside of the touchline or goal line.

LAW X – METHOD OF SCORING: Conform to FIFA. The whole ball must be past the goal line and inside the goal post.

LAW XI – OFF-SIDES:  There are no off-sides called in this format.

LAW XII – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT:  Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:

  1. All fouls shall result in an indirect free kick with the opponents six (5) yards away.
  2. The referee/coach/parent must explain ALL infractions to the offending player.

LAW XIII – FREE KICKS:  Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:

  1. Shall be classified under one heading INDIRECT.
  2. A goal may not be scored until the ball has been played of touched by a second player of either team.
  3. No kicks shall be taken by the attacking team within the defending team’s goal box.

LAW XIV – PENALTY KICK:  No penalty kicks are to be taken during these games.

LAW XV – THROW-IN:

A second throw-in must be allowed if the player commits a foul on the initial attempt. The referee shall explain the proper method before allowing the player to rethrow.

LAW XVI – GOAL KICK:  Conform to FIFA with the following exceptions:

  1. Goal kick may be taken within two (2) or three (3) yards of the goal.
  2. Opponents must be six (5) yards away from the ball.

LAW XVII – CORNER KICK:  Opponents must be six (5) yards away from the ball.

U.S. Youth Soccer Recommendations

  • Opposing parent/coaches and players should shake hands after each game.
  • Do not record league standings.
  • Do not record final score.
  • Parent/coaches are on the field acting as referees.
  • Participation awards for ALL - No trophies or awards just for the best team.
  • No alcoholic beverages should be consumed or allowed near playing area.
